52 - Fight or Flight

As much as Maia wanted to stay in Moonlight Falls and face down Kadru, she knew she couldn’t put her family or her challenge at risk for a fight she wasn’t sure of winning.

It was time to run again.

In the morning, Maia called Hamilton over and explained her predicament. He agreed that leaving Moonlight Falls was her only option.

“I know. But what about my grown children?” she fretted. “I’ll be taking the younger ones with me, but I fear the older ones might be in danger, too. But how can I ask them to move as well, especially when so many of them need to remain here to help protect the town from zombie attacks as they are destined to do?”

“It’s not the children Kadru is seeking— it’s you,” Hamilton reminded her. “Besides, how would she even know which residents are your children? You have always given them their father’s surnames, which should keep her from singling your kids out. And even if she did manage to find that information somehow, Kadru would have to wipe Moonlight Falls off the map because everyone here would fight to protect them. Because of your influence, everyone is stronger and has learned to stand together against adversity, and I doubt Kadru is prepared to take on an entire town of angry supernaturals. Besides, my guess is that she is more likely to send some of her mummy or genie minions after you again like she has in the past. Either way, I’ll post an alert; if any strangers sneak into town, we’ll deal with them.”

“For now, I think it’s best if you started packing up and be ready to move soon.  I have a few contacts to check in with that may help aid you in finding a new home elsewhere and covering your trail. I’ll get on that and get back to you as soon as the plans are made.”

Maia packed up everyone’s clothing and personal belongings, but left behind all the furnishings that came with the house.  And during the packing, she fit in as many family activities into their last days in Moonlight Falls as she could so they could soak up as many memories together as possible.

Hamilton returned later to let Maia know about his progress.

“I have everything all set up,” Hamilton told her.  “One of my contacts, Isak Majgård, who assisted your youngest sister Merope when she was still a baby challenge mother, understands a great deal of what there is to know about 100 BC’s from her. He’s someone you can trust with your secret and can help you out with anything you might need.  He’s also quite handy around the house. And speaking of houses, Isak says all the arrangements have been made and your new residence is ready for you. He’ll be there when you arrive to get you situated and answer any questions you have.”

Now that the move was imminent, it was time to celebrate the final birthdays in Moonlight Falls, starting with the toddlers.

Happy birthday Logan!

Happy birthday Skye!

Moving would be easier on them since they hadn’t begun school yet, though Maia knew they’d miss their father, Wulfric. But there would be phone calls and emails to keep them close, and one day they’d move back to Moonlight Falls and join the MoonClaw Pack.

Things would be harder for the quads, and they weren’t happy about leaving their elementary school classmates and teachers behind and starting over as the new kids in a new town.  But they had each other, and the bond they shared helped them feel less apprehensive. And while they would miss their Daddy Alex and Uncle Braeden, they too would be moving back to Moonlight Falls after they graduated, to help with safeguarding the town as well.

The fairy triplets and their IF’s wouldn’t be affected by the move, since it was time for them to age up and graduate.

Happy birthday Aylin!

Happy birthday Hesper!

Happy birthday Alaric!

Happy birthday Jasper!

Happy birthday Arielle!

Happy birthday Vesper!

All six of them graduated with highest honors and Alaric was named valedictorian.

Parker had gotten Aylin a job as a supply driver for a warehouse. Hesper planned to pursue a degree in business and work for a mega corporation. Alaric excelled in technology and planned to become an inventor, and his IF Jasper enjoyed tinkering with appliances and hoped to possibly work with more advanced technology after going to University. Arielle wanted to master all the different instruments and play inspiring music for plants and maybe conduct a symphony someday, while Vesper got a job doing sing-a-grams.

Maia felt strange as she hugged them goodbye that evening, since soon she would be leaving, too.  But she tried not to dwell on that and wished them all the success in the world for their new lives on their own.

Later that night after her remaining children had gone to bed, Maia went into the basement to gather up the last of her potions and small magical items.

She looked around the room, remembering all that she had learned and accomplished magically here. While she would miss the house, Maia knew that she would always carry the memories with her.  And she was looking forward to all the exciting possibilities she hoped the new town had to offer.

Braeden and Alex scouted around Moonlight Falls as they did every evening while hunting now, keeping watch for strangers. So far, they had never seen anyone they didn’t recognize.

Until tonight.

As the Delling brothers strolled past the café, a 1969 Dodge Charger blew through the intersection and then turned down the street where Maia lived. They didn’t catch a very good look at the occupants of the vehicle, but they knew no one in Moonlight Falls had a car like that.

The brothers took off on foot in pursuit.

When they reached Seven Towers, their suspicions were confirmed and they saw the Charger parked in Maia’s driveway. No one appeared to be inside the vehicle, and all the lights in Maia’s home were off.

Quickly, the brothers canvassed the lot but found no sign of anyone.

“We have to get inside,” Braeden said urgently, and tried going in the house. But instead of walking in like usual, he found himself landing abruptly on his backside.

“Crap!  I forgot she uninvited us!”  Braeden got up from the ground and started pounding on the door.

Alex whipped out his smart phone and called Maia.

But no one came to answer the door, and the phone just rang on and on...
