78 - Awake

Grim had done what he’d intended. He took Maia’s pain so she would be strong enough to have a successful birth. He’d released her from her bargain, knowing she’d be more willing to follow through with the BC if she felt she had a choice in the matter. He still needed her to continue the challenge, and if that meant making sure she was more willing and better prepared, well, he’d done his best to tell her what she needed to know.

But Maia was too curious, and there were some questions Grim didn’t want to answer. He didn’t want to tell her he had once lived in the deepest pit of the underworld where the vilest of undead beings were still imprisoned.  He didn't want to tell her he had far less power over the undead pit creatures than she believed. He didn’t want to tell her that he was not originally an undead at all, or that the Iblisan, Kadru, who had ordered Maia’s recent abduction, was the same individual who had torn his living soul from his body so long ago. And he certainly didn’t want to explain to her that—misguided fool though he had been—he had completely deserved his punishment for what he’d done.  For that, and for what he had yet to do...

But transporting Maia to and from the underworld had drained the Reaper’s powers greatly. And when she went into labor with the child of Kadru’s undead mummy minion Zhemerkhet, he took on all the pain of the childbirth as well as the death she would’ve succumbed to during it had he not intervened. The strain of keeping Maia alive rendered him unconscious, and Grim crumpled to the ground.

While the Reaper slept, time moved on.

But from that day forward, all the ghosts of the newly dead haunted the overworld in ever greater numbers, having no one to reap them and guide their souls into the underworld.

And while Grim lay oblivious, the undying creatures from the underworld’s deepest pit sought escape from their prison.  More and more of these soulless zombies managed to find their way through the thinner veils that separated the overworld from the underworld—the most fragile veils being located in the town of Moonlight Falls.

But eventually, the echo of a voice found its way into the Reaper’s dark and dreamless sleep and tugged at his consciousness. It sounded as though someone was calling out to him from far away.

Maia?!

And the Grim Reaper awoke.

He scrambled to his feet, only to feel himself abruptly hurtled towards the overworld as though he’d been catapulted by a giant rubber-band, and then snapped into a living body he was quite familiar with, although he had not possessed it for millennia.

 “Samael?!”

It was Grim’s own true name, a name that had not been spoken by anyone for eons, one that he had long since forgotten, but was now carried to his ear on the breath of his beloved.

For a brief moment Samael gazed at Maia, the woman he had loved so many lifetimes ago; the woman he had never stopped loving in all the ages since. And now the power of Maia’s wish and the magic that sought to reunite them had returned him to the overworld. At last, she remembered him and had somehow set him free!

Samael quivered with barely suppressed emotion as he reached out his arm to tenderly stroke Maia’s cheek.

But suddenly, it seemed to him that the earth itself turned inside out, its molten heart burning away his physical body as his consciousness was forced to flee from his corporeal form.

Samael found himself back in the underworld, in the skeletal body of the Grim Reaper once again.

Grim threw back his head and screamed in despair at his loss, his cries of anguish echoing throughout the hollow caverns of the underworld.

But he understood all too well the reason for his sudden return. After all, how could he return to the realm of the living as Maia’s soulmate when he no longer possessed his own soul??

Without a soul of his own, he was unable to stay in the overworld with Maia as her soulmate and fulfill the wish she had made. And when his consciousness had been returned to the form of the Reaper, the fairies of the well had been obligated to give Maia the nearest probable substitute they could, based on the parameters of her wish—a man who didn’t necessarily look like Samael, but with whom she shared a romantic bond and deep connection in the past.

And so, they brought her Reid, a man who, unlike Grim, had a soul.

They brought her Reid, the only man in existence who had nearly as deep of a romantic connection to Maia as Samael himself had.

They brought her Reid, the same man whose discovery of Samael and Maia’s love in the distant past had ultimately led to their age-old separation and torment.

The agony of having his soulmate stolen away from him all over again before he could even touch her as Samael was almost more than he could bear. He had to tell Maia everything, he had to help her understand, and he still had to find and reclaim his own torn-out soul. Only then could they end the curse that had been laid upon them; only then would they be free to be together again. And when the opportunity to see Maia again presented itself, he would have to act with nothing but the limited power he had left in his still depleted body, no matter the cost.  But Samael was the Grim Reaper, and in order to even leave the underworld to get near Maia—somebody close to her would have to die...

  1. Kill Reid!! Kill Reid!!! He can be Grim/Samael's substitute! Well he already is the soulmate substitute, but I mean like he die so Samael and Maia can be together!

    1. Ooh, you’re a bloodthirsty wench, eh? xD Although I must admit that killing Reid would be terribly convenient! >:D

But at this point, there is no known reason for Maia to kill him, and as the Reaper, Grim/Samael can only leave the underworld to collect already dead souls. And while he is waiting for somebody near Maia to die in order to get near her and try to explain their shared past to her, a lot can happen, mwahahaha! And it could easily be anyone who dies in close proximity to Maia that brings the Reaper calling in the future—it could be Reid, one of Maia’s children, a former baby daddy or even a random stranger who dies on the same lot as her—anyone! Nobody is safe! O_O

However, even after Reid or somebody else dies by accident or design and Grim/Samael can speak with Maia; he still needs to recover his own missing soul before he could ever be with her again... :'(

    2. Well.... yeah eh heh especially when it comes to things like this!!

I didn't say Maia or Samael had to kill him... an incredibly coincidental Makayla-sim or the like could come along and BAM! Reid is dead ;) but no! Not a kid! Not one of Maia's family! No! Bad star! A baby daddy is fine. But not a kid >:(

True.... but at least when someone *cough* Reid *cough* dies, they're one step closer to being reunited. I know you'll have something tricky up your sleeve :)

    3. xD

SNORTLOL! An incredibly coincidental Makayla–sim?? Too funny! And I’m not saying that it WILL be a kid, but it still could be. Just letting people know the option is on the table. And yes, bad star is bad and would do it if it works for the story—just saying. >;)

That is true that they will be a step closer to being reunited after Grim can talk to Maia. But tricky? O_O Moi? Mwahahaha! xD

    4. Well yeah... or one of the sims she controls *evil smile* hmmm, gotta lay all the cards on the table... but killing one of Maia's kids would be evil! Bad enough that you've given her her murderer as her fake soulmate, then you gotta kill one of her kids?! BAD!

I just want Maia to have her soulmate :( and yes, tricky! It should be your middle name!

      Delete
    5. Yeah, it would be evil to kill one of Maia’s kids, but that’s exactly why it’s so tempting to do—being bad is fun! >:D I could be just totally messing with you though. :P And all I can say about your suspicion concerning Reid is that it’s... interesting. ;)

Me too, but every character needs something meaningful to strive towards, so I can’t make it too easy for her! And lol, I have to be a little tricky—I’m a storyteller—which pretty much means I’m a scheming liar! O_O Eh, I can live with that. xD

      Delete
    6. Oh so you're a little rebel ;) AN EVIL ONE! Hang on... which suspicion? That he's an evil lying murderer fake soulmate?

Maia already has something meaningful to strive towards, having 100 children so she can save the world! Isn't that enough? *sighs* apparently not.

      Delete
    7. Lolz! I guess so! :P Yep, that would be the suspicion... ;)

Nope, definitely not enough! >:D Even though Maia has the BC as her main goal to strive towards, other things must happen to make it more difficult at times or distract her attention away from it; otherwise, the result would be predictable, fairly easily achieved, and ultimately make for a long and boring story. Then there are the lesser goals throughout, some of which are accomplished without difficulty and some that take a great deal more effort to overcome, which adds some additional conflict as well as personalizing Maia’s struggle. So, “apparently not” would be my answer too. xD

      Delete
    8. Well its the truth not a suspicion!
Eh, you storytellers are terrible, but I suppose that its true :/

      Delete
    9. More like part truth, part suspicion; the only thing that is known fact (and not even known yet to Maia) is that Reid is not Samael and therefore not her soulmate. The evil lying murderer part is merely suspicion without solid evidence. xD

Yesh, storytellers are terrible in that they inflict all kinds of mayhem on their characters... but that is the best part! >:D

  2. GRIM!!!! Of course it's Grimmy! Grimmy Is!Sam! Ohhh, that's perfect! Her first baby-daddy and the one who'd given her the task to begin with! I had a thought back during her pregnancy with Seth that it was terribly romantic that he was taking her pain from her, and that he'd already done so during her first pregnancy. But he took the 'death she would’ve succumbed to' too?!?!?! OHH GRIMMY! I ship it!

... and Grimmy doesn't look so good. 0.0 No wonder the zombies were popping out of their graves in Moonlight Falls! Grimmy's in trouble!

Ahhh, but there are still so many questions! What did Grim do to deserve his soul being ripped away? How is he going to get it back? And WHAT WHAT WHAT is Reid doing in the far-off past creeping on Maia and Sam's cozy campfire!?!? I knew he was bad news but gah! This means trouble! I wonder if Reid remembers his distant past... I suspect he does. Sort of... 0.0

Oh dear! You're going to kill someone in the household aren't you? Lol, reading your reply to Makayla, I was like, "NOOOO!!! Not one of Maia's children! NOOOO!!!!" But even a death in the family would be a twisted sort of good thing if Grim can reach Maia through it!

    This calls for nail-biting!

    1. Oh YAAAAAAAASSSS! Grim Is!Sam! xD Yep, the Reaper was Maia’s first baby daddy (and even her first woohoo partner since she was never intimate with her first husband Charlie Ray Buckshot as it was a marriage of convenience for her safety and he was still in love with his ex-wife Madeline anyway) and the one that started her on the task because, unlike Maia, Grim remembers their past life together, the curse, and the prophecy. I’ve had this planned FOREVER and I’m so glad you ship them! :D And also, the save where I take all the past life screenshots is called Grimaia. xD Although Samaia would work too now! Or Samaiael? LOL

Yeah, Grim has had a rough time of it; bringing Maia to the underworld was a major undertaking, and taking her pain and certain death from her undead pregnancies took everything he had. And yep, I used that for my reasoning behind the occasional zombie escapes from the underworld pit in Moonlight Falls and the reason so many more ghosts now walk in the overworld—Grim couldn’t reap souls or try to prevent zombies escaping while he was in his coma, which is also why he hasn’t been seen in this story for a very long time.

Yes, many more questions! Isn’t that how it always goes? xD But there will be answers forthcoming about Grim and his actions and choices in the distant past, although those will naturally lead to more drama! “Sort of” is a pretty good guess as far as Reid remembering the distant past, but I can’t say more than that... yet. >:D

It is certainly possible. And as I replied to your comment on the Sims site, “household” could mean anything as I move Sims I want to control in and out of Maia’s house all the time. So it really could be anybody. But yes, the “twisted sort of good thing” is something I do find appealing... it would definitely be more poignant and meaningful story wise!

O_O You are not going to have any left if you keep doing that! :P

      Delete
    2. I didn't realize Maia hadn't been intimate with Charlie until you mentioned it during her recent honeymoon. I suppose it shouldn't really have surprised me since they had so little romantic chemistry, but still. Interesting tid-bit that had not occurred to me.

Lol I love all those ship-names! Grimaia sounds kinda like the name of a Tim-Burton-esque underworld. I think I shall claim Samaiael as my favorite, though! It even sounds like it would be a good name... for like a third baby maybe. =D

Ohhh, I'd thought that Grim was just busy doing his reaper-thing all this time and now I find out he's been comatose from taking away Maia's pain and death! ='( ! I wondered about him in Moonlight Falls when things were getting bad... but gah! Seriously, I ship this so hard it's painful.

I should've figured you would answer that way. lol

I see what you mean, though when I said 'household' the ones I was most worried about would be Maia's children. =( A baby daddy... sure! (Fridge the men!) But not one of Maia's baaaaabies!

Eh, don't worry about it. I'm not too fond of long fingernails anyway. =P

      Delete
    3. I think it was more of an inferred thing than ever outright stated. But the honeymoon she had planned with Reid seemed like a good place to mention that Maia and Charlie Ray never got it on, haha. If nothing else, I thought it would help explain why she didn’t want to bring the family along, lol. Even though part of me wanted them to have a miniature bride, a miniature groom and a little ring bearer.

Grimaia does sound like the name of a creepy sort of world, lol. I’m kind of torn between Samaia and Samaiael for a ship name though. I think I like Samaia best for a child’s name. I name a lot of my kids in other saves after both parents like that when I can’t think of something I like better right away, haha.

Actually, that Grim was busy reaping was what I’d hoped everyone would assume until I got to this part of the story, lol. I never thought it would take this long to get there though! O_O

Yesh, I had to answer that way, haha.

Lol about fridging the men! But I know; y’all are worried about Maia’s children now! Of all the possibilities I listed, I figured everyone would seize on that one though. ;P The only problem is that one of the rules states that if you intentionally kill a kid, it no longer counts towards the challenge total. But while I don’t like the idea of killing a kid, I’d still totally do it if it worked best for the story. Although... what if I killed one of the kids that already didn’t count towards the total, then that rule wouldn’t matter, would it? >:D

Lol, okay. But you could chew on the hem of your cape instead—it’s got catnip in it! Fun times await! LOL

      Delete
    4. Inference I did not catch though. Lol, a miniature bride and groom would have been super cute! But of course, bringing the kids along makes for less sexy fun times. =(

I think Samaia makes a good name for a child too, I just thought of Samaiael being a name first. I've never combined names for both parents in my own saves, though I have sometimes wondered if it would make for a cute name.

Better to take a long time for a quality product in my opinion! That and reality is always more important. I would hate for you to neglect responsibility for the sake of your challenge, as much as I love your challenge!

Oooh, I didn't think about the rules. 0.0 NOOOO NOT CASPIAN! lol, I know he's all grown up and gone but he's the only kid that comes to mind that doesn't count for the challenge, unless Maia has more kids with Reid. But noooo not the pretty Reid babies either! *covers eyes*

*rolling around rubbing her face on everything and looking very stoned* ... huh?

      Delete
    5. Well as they say online, “pix or it didn’t happen” and since there were no pix, it didn’t happen, lol. (It really didn’t though, lol.) But yeah, funny how sexy fun times often results in children, and yet having children around reduces sexy fun times! D:

Sometimes mixing names makes for interesting combinations that you wouldn’t otherwise use. I had an old SV save where I hooked up all the NPC’s and gave their kids combo names. Thornton and Morgana Wolff had Morten, Nick and Vita Alto had Vic and Nita, Jaime Jolina and Christopher Steele had Chaim, etc. And IRL, I once took care of an elderly patient whose father’s name was Ray and whose mother’s name was Clara—and they named her Claray. I thought that was kind of cute.

Yep, I agree. As much as I’d like things to be perfect in this story I know they’re not, but I will still always try to do the best I can with what I have, and that takes time. And there’s no way I could neglect responsibilities for the challenge, no matter how much I enjoy writing and simming, so I guess it is what it is. Still feels good to have shared the big secret though!

xD I use the rules more as guidelines anyway, although I would follow the one about not counting any children killed on purpose and not accidentally by the game (like what happened with Xanaia originally). Besides Caspian, there are also all the IF’s Maia has raised alongside her biological children that don’t count towards the challenge total that could be killed without reducing my stats. Or I could have an “accidental” second pregnancy from any number of Maia’s past baby daddies and kill one of those children. And yep, I could bring in an adult child like Caspian or any of the others who do count back into the story for the death too. Endless possibilities! >:D

      LOL! xD

      Delete
    6. Funny how that works! lol

Awww... that is kind of cute! It's a real cute name too, Claray. I kinda like Morten and Chaim as kids names too.

It feels good to know the big secret! No matter how long we had to wait. =D

I left the BMTL rules far behind like fifteen chapters ago, so I'm hardly one to judge! lol Ooh, I hadn't thought about the IFs. I guess I would be sad to see any of them go, but I dunno... there's just something about the kids. Maybe cause I've watched them grow. =( Or maybe just cause... they're Maia's KIDS! 0.0 Ooohhh, and adult children coming back only to be offed... When you say, "Endless possibilities!" I imagine you rubbing your hands together and laughing evilly with the "Fiendishly Delighted" buff.

      =D

    7. As a parent, I must say it is a most perplexing and unfortunate situation! LOLZ

I like some of those names too, especially Morten. I have to admit I had a hard time trying to come up with names for the Wan-Goddard’s kids that way though!

Yays for big revelations and here’s to the busting out of even MOAR secrets! xD

I agree there’s less of an attachment with the IF’s (you only see them briefly when they come to life as teens and they aren’t very fleshed out character-wise), which is why the death of children or other characters that readers have known for awhile would be more dramatic of a loss. And you’re right about me being fiendishly delighted! I love to play the “what if” game, especially when the plot starts getting dark! Mwahahaha!

      xD

    8. =D

Hmm... that is a tough one. Errr.. Pank? X.X

As I said on your thread, the 'what if' game can be pretty fun but it sure does make me bite my nails! 0.0

      Delete
    9. Lol @ Pank! xD But you see my dilemma with Hank and Pauline’s kids! Anyway, I got them married, so I figured I could add Pauline’s maiden name into the mix. Well, Wan helped a little, since I thought when combined with Hank, Han or Hans would be doable. (I just realized Wan + Hank could also be Wank, lolz!) I still had no idea what to do for a girl though, so I just hoped for a boy. Well, I got a boy—and then I got a girl also! Twins! O_O So I’m like, now what??

Well, I remembered Hank is often a nn for Henry, so ry + Paul could be Paulry and maybe I could slightly alter that to Polly? But then I tried Hen + line—Henline altered to Henley. So I went with Hans and Henley. :) And at that point I said no more kids for you guys; your names are too difficult, lol. Well, they ended up getting divorced so they didn’t have a chance to have any more. But later, Hank got abducted and alien pregnant. -.-

He had a girl, so I figured I could go with the previously unused name Polly. But that didn’t feel right since it wasn’t Pauline’s, the two of them were already divorced and Polly just didn’t seem like a very good alien name, haha. But I didn’t want to make a ship name with Hank and the alien either since they weren’t together. So instead, I switched up the letters of Hank’s name and called her Ankh, which I thought was more appropriately unusual and suited her better. :D

But STAHP biting your nails, lol. You’re going to have them down to bloody nubs by the time I get the next chapter posted! (Which may be awhile yet since the available time I had to sim this week went into the free game trial on Origin for TS4. Oops.)

      Delete
    10. Lol, yes I see the dilemma! Gracious, what drama going on in Hank's life! Divorce, then impregnanted by aliens. I do believe Ankh is a pretty good name for an alien baby though! =D

*puts hands behind her back* Iz shall try. Heh. 0.0 So you tried TS4, huh? I thought the way they were advertising the trial on every page of the forums was a tad obnoxious. Did you like it at all?

      Delete
    11. Lol, yup! There was drama for Hank indeed! xD Thanks!

Yeah, I did. I haven’t been too impressed with what I’ve seen so far, but since it was a free trial I figured I may as well see for myself. And I think how they yanked us all over to the new site and closed down the TS3 forums but kept the other things open there was equally obnoxious.

Anyway, TS4 does have some good points, but I verified it is not a game for me. For starters, I dislike digital downloads as installing via a disk is faster—it took 1.3 hours for me, although I know other simmers had it far worse. The performance is excellent; load screens were all under 10 seconds and saves took about 3—but everything is so low poly and low resolution that it’s not worth the trade-off to me. The things that frustrated me most while playing were the annoying tutorial pop ups that you can’t turn off in game, the UI that is all over the place, and the wonky camera angles.

The Sims look decent in CAS and I like how deeply you can customize body types and how the categories are sorted, but although my graphics were auto-set to ultra, the Sims just didn’t look as good in game. I didn’t miss open world as much as I thought I would (although it would be better if they at least opened up the neighborhoods), but I did miss CASt immensely (although I feel a color wheel might be an acceptable compromise). I really hate that the babies are tied to their bassinets, although they sound very cute. Not having toddlers had me QQ’ing— that was what made me lose interest in playing my family. I also disliked not having repairmen and other service Sims. Emotions are an interesting concept but the execution was irritating with their constant mood swings and all the pinging sounds that accompanied each change in mood for every Sim. And I don’t like how they route through each other—that is horrid for picture-taking.

I could go on, but those were the immediate issues for me. But the main reason I opted not to buy to begin with is due to the lack of bug fixes and issues with patching breaking more things. There were so many known coding problems in TS3—and even some things in TS2—that were never fixed except by modders when possible. Unfortunately, it seems to me that EA is going down that same route once again. :/

      Delete
    12. I debated trying it for all of two seconds, but since I had already decided to quit TS3, I decided it really wasn't worth it.

That's about what I hear from most people who tried it out. I already knew no toddlers was a big QQ point for me, and it also really bothered me that teens and adults are apparently the same height. Plus bugs still being prevalent. One of the low points for me on TS3 was that I spent so much time just trying to get things to work correctly. Makes everything less fun. =(

      Delete
    13. Good reason! No point in ridding yourself of one distraction only to possibly lose yourself in another! :P Not that I find anything compelling in TS4, but that’s me.

Oh yeah, teen height is another complaint I have with TS4, but for me it pales in light of the other failings of the game. And bugs are an ongoing issue for certain. And yes, I know what you mean with TS3—the unoptimized engine, poor coding, memory leaks, so many bugs left to be fixed by modders or not at all—all that did make for more game fixing and troubleshooting than playing quite often. But the thing that really ticks me off is that although EA was aware of the problems, apparently it just wasn’t cost-effective enough for them to fix them. Well then, it’s not worth it for me to buy EA games anymore—if they won’t support their games properly, I simply won’t support EA by purchasing their future products. Not liking TS4 just makes it that much easier. On the plus side, I got TS2 UC for free and I have TS3 modded to avoid the worst problems; it runs quite well for me now, and if I do have issues I know how to fix them. I’m not paying EA for the dubious pleasure of doing that again though!

      Delete
    14. lol, I didn't think it would make for a good distraction seeing as how I didn't like too much of what I've heard about it, but no use even testing that theory. =D

It still astounds me that modders were the ones working out the glitches. 0.0 I would think if volunteers could find time to iron out game bugs, then paid employees should have time too... but eh... what do I know about creating video games? xP

      Delete
    15. Makes sense! The trial confirmed that the game is not something I’m willing to invest time or money in, but like you, I’d already figured as much.

Lol, IKR? Modders should be able to use their time to create additional options to enhance gameplay, not have to adjust coding in the game to make it properly playable. And yes, if one man in his spare time could create an entire suite of mods to repair issues as well as fine tune options, why can’t paid EA programmers at least repair what they’ve broken themselves? Not cost-effective, that’s why. And if modders fix enough of the broken things, that’s less that EA has to, which means they can focus on pumping out more paid content instead. :/

Just one example of many... did you know that the laser rhythm a con star challenge is unachievable? It appears EA copied the code from the guitar star challenge and never followed through adjusting it. The problem was posted on Crinrict’s highly visible ITF bug list, but EA never bothered with it. An NRAAS modder fixed it within one day of hearing of the issue.

I certainly don’t expect perfection, but I do expect problems to be fixed in a timely manner when a company is informed about them, not ignored as unimportant. That tells me that as a customer, my satisfaction in their product is not important. And since my expectations haven't been met in the past, I'm done with EA until they can prove otherwise. I just won't be holding my breath while I wait. :P
